Germany has a number of well-known large cities, ranging from Berlin to Münich. However, it is worthwhile to venture outside of these metropolitan jungles to some of the smaller but equally stunning locations.

There are numerous attractive towns, villages, and small cities throughout Germany. On the coast, there are picturesque fishing villages, fantasy towns on the river, and lonely mountain settlements.

Exploring the countryside is a fantastic opportunity to learn about German culture and history. Not to mention take some fantastic Instagram photos!

Potsdam

Potsdam is a small city located just outside of Berlin. Even though it’s only a short train journey away, this picturesque town feels worlds away from the gritty German metropolis. The short distance and easy connection make it an ideal day trip option from Berlin.

Potsdam was originally the capital of the Prussian empire, and its glitz and opulence can still be found here today. Traditional architecture, attractive cafés, and boutiques abound in the town center.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Park Sanssouci is the primary attraction in Potsdam. Several sumptuous Baroque palaces and elegant royal gardens can be found here.

Cochem

Cochem is a tiny town in western Germany on the Moselle River. Wine tastings and excursions to local vineyards are a must-do during a vacation to Cochem, as the region is known for its wine.

Cochem has been inhabited since the Celtic and Roman periods. Unfortunately, during World War II, much of the old core city was destroyed. The majority of it has been restored to its former splendour, with stunning classic German architecture. The majestic Reichsburg Cochem, a Medieval toll castle, is located above this charming village and may be visited as part of a guided trip.

Active travelers will find Cochem to be a wonderful starting point. Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities in the area. The river valley below can be seen from the high ridges of the hills. Alternatively, take a boat cruise to see Cochem’s splendor.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is undoubtedly one of the first towns that spring to mind when you think about beautiful German towns. Many people’s Instagram feeds have been graced by this very lovely city. And rightfully so! Rothenburg has a fairy tale appearance that isn’t quite real. It is part of the Romantic Road, which runs between Würzburg and Füssen and passes through many attractive towns and castles.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a Medieval city and one of only three in Germany with preserved medieval city walls. Wandering through the small streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the perfect way to spend a day there, taking in the historical ambiance and architecture. The Medieval Crime and Justice Museum, the Rathaus, and St. James Church are among the museums and landmarks worth visiting.

While the city is lovely all year, the winter adds an added layer of enchantment. Rothenburg ob der Tauber features one of the world’s most magical and popular Christmas Markets every December.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg, Germany’s university city, is a famous tourist destination as well as a place to live for Germans. Who wouldn’t want to wake up every day to such enchanting views?

Heidelberg’s history extends back to before the 12th century, and its university, founded in 1386, is Germany’s oldest. The charming old city center has been wonderfully conserved, with exquisite buildings and quaint side streets.

The town and the castle above it can be seen from the Old Bridge over the Neckar. The best views, however, can be found from the Königstuhl, one of the nearby hilltops. You may either climb the 1000+ steps of stone stairs or take the funicular to get there. But don’t be fooled by the city’s rich history; Heidelberg is alive and well! Because about a quarter of the population is students, there are plenty of cultural events and cool bars.
