Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – The world’s first publicly accessible art depot, built by the architectural group MVRDV, is located in Rotterdam’s Museum Park, near the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. There is no other work building in the world that not only makes the museum collection public but also allows a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum’s operation, which also holds private and corporate collections. The new depot is a Gesamtkunstwerk; the structure and layout of the outside area establish it as a new Rotterdam symbol.

The world’s first accessible art depot

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen exhibits the whole art collection and provides visitors with a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the museum. The depot has fourteen climate-controlled compartments outfitted with racks, racks, and cabinets for various works of art. Paintings, metals, biological and inorganic materials, black-and-white and color photos all have depots. The depot spaces are kept at a constant humidity and temperature. The pieces of art may be viewed from a variety of perspectives from the promenade, the stairs, and the elevator.

Over 151,000 works of art

The collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is internationally renowned. This collection has been developing for over 172 years and now contains about 151,000 works of art, 88,000 of which are prints and drawings. Only roughly 8% of the collection was shown in the massive museum structure. The vast majority was held in several facilities that are off-limits to the public. Everything is shown together at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, depending on climatic needs rather than art movement or chronology.

Design

The depot was erected on behalf of the city of Rotterdam to the design of architect Winy Maas, co-founder of the Rotterdam architectural company MVRDV. At 39.5 meters, it is as tall as the neighbouring Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s museum tower. The mirrored exterior, in addition to the building’s spherical form, is the most eye-catching feature. The glass front is 6,609 square meters in size, split into 1,664 mirror panels. As a result, the structure is translucent, and the depot merges in with its surroundings. The roof garden with restaurant reflects the lush setting in which the building is located. On top of the structure, there are 75 birches and perhaps twenty pines. The greenery of the roof garden merges into the green surrounds of the park if you stare perpendicularly down on the depot from the air.
